Arrival at Keflafik airport.
We settle in trailers, buy food in the market and go to our first campsite. The campsites in Iceland will serve as our temporary stopover.
And we’re not spending the night anywhere, but right at the junction of the European and North American tectonic plates!
So, what to see in Iceland? We’ll show you her most “pearly” places!
Our day begins with a tour of the Öxarárfoss tectonic fault and waterfall, after which we take selfies with the highest geyser in the world – Geysir and one of the largest waterfalls in Europe – Gullfoss falls.
After completing the golden ring we will head to one of the most unusual waterfalls – Seljalandsfoss. Its highlight is that you can walk directly between the rushing streams of water and the rock from which it comes down!
After such a busy day, we need to have a good rest, so we chose a campsite right at the foot of the Skogafoss waterfall as our next stop! Here we will make our first salmon barbecue and fall asleep to the sound of one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Iceland.
After breakfast, we will go for a photo shoot with a waterfall. We will have the opportunity to climb to the top and take a bird’s eye view of the waterfall and the mouth of the river that flows through the lava fields into the Atlantic Ocean.
Then we return to the black beach to see Dyrhólaey and Reynisfjara Beach from the side. If we are lucky with the weather, we will see huge waves that break on the rocks right at our feet! After capturing the beach with the basalt pillars on camera, we drive up to take a closer look at them and see the famous panorama of Vik Beach.
We continue our way through the lava fields toward the Ice Lagoon. On the way we will see and photograph fields covered with moss and cross the river formed by the melting of the largest glacier in Europe, Vatnajokull.
As we approach the lagoon, we see dozens of icebergs in the rays of the receding sun, and below, between the ice floes, sea lions are playing. This will most likely become your favorite place in Iceland!
We will spend the night in the town of Höfn. If we are lucky, we will see a flock of deer, which often grazes right next to the campsite.
In the morning we will buy groceries in the market and go.
Today we will take a serpentine ride up the Icelandic highlands and descend into one of the warmest parts of the island, where we will see the Hengifoss waterfall. On the way we will enjoy a view of the Vestrahom Rocks.
If we are lucky with the weather, we will be able to camp at the foot of Hengifoss. After the picnic, we will go to a small track to the waterfalls and take some very cool photos.
Today we will stop early at the campsite to relax and have a lakeside barbecue party. In our opinion, this is the best campsite we have ever been to.
After a barbecue party, you need to sleep well, so we leave a little later than usual and go to look at the most powerful waterfall in Europe – Dettifoss.
The multicolored earth beneath your feet, the steam that rises from crevices in the ground like a steam engine chimney and the persistent smell of sulfur – all this is the fumarole fields of Hverir. Fumaroles are cracks or openings that form on the slopes of volcanoes, from which jets of hot gas and sulfur spurt to the surface, causing the ground in those areas to be colored yellow, blue, green, and orange. It seems that you have landed on another planet.
The rest of the day we will spend at the thermal spa – Myvatn. Muvatn baths are natural steam rooms and open-air pools. The entire thermal complex was built on a fault in the earth’s crust with geothermal water extracted from a depth of 2500 meters. The resort is located on Lake Miwatn, 100km from the Arctic Circle! Lake Miwatne and its surroundings are one of the greatest natural treasures of Europe.
When we open our eyes in the morning, behind our campsite we will see a high triangular mountain – it is the crater of the volcano Hverfjall. We have breakfast and climb it, enjoying the gorgeous views.
Next we have a move to Akureyri, the second largest city in Iceland. Here we replenish our provisions and go to see the ancient Icelandic village museum. Something like the Kyiv Pirogovo. Perhaps at the farm we will see the local breed of horses and be able to take pictures with them. This is a special breed that is bred only in Iceland.
Transfer to campsite and overnight. In the evening, as usual, we will have a delicious dinner in good company.
Early departure and transfer to the capital of Iceland – Reykjavik.
An underwater tunnel awaits us along the way. We are going to go down to – 100m under the ocean level!
The rest of the day we walk around the city, and in the evening we come to the car wash to clean up the cars before handing them over. Then we drive to our last campsite in Iceland not far from the airport.
Flight home.
